My name is Courtney Graham. I’m a midwife and I’ve been practicing for four years in downtown Toronto. I decided to become a midwife because I wanted to work in a health-based context with women and families in something that involves social justice.
We as midwives approached the government on a number of occasions asking for a compensation review. We were unable to come to a conclusion with the government and we voted as a membership to take the issue to the Human Rights Tribunal based on gender discrimination.
I believe pay equity is equal pay for equal work regardless of your sex, your identified gender, and the colour of your skin or your background.
Pay equity is about respect and it’s long #overdue.
